If you’re a music aficionado, constantly on the lookout for a rare record while keeping your eyes peeled for underground subcultures, look no further. Singapore is rife with vinyl and music curio. We’ve identified two starting points from where you can begin your journey. Rahul Advani, (@vinyl_junky) who defines himself as a policy wonk, amateur photographer and music nerd, has his ear to the ground. Here are two of his recommendations in Singapore for record collectors and vinyl lovers.
Visit Roxy Records & Trading at the Excelsior Shopping Center. This is a family business that has been around for over 50 years. You’ll find here a mix of vinyl, CDs and yes – even cassettes. This spot is best suited to you if you’re looking for something a little more grind or metal in nature. Or even if you just want to browse. It’s sometimes hard not to get fazed when looking upon shelves of unsorted collectibles. So in case you get tired of looking or want something specific, you can ask them to deliver to you (at no extra cost).
The Analog Vault on Raffles Avenue champions a belief in vinyl and analog music culture. The shop offers a wide array of experimental vinyl in jazz, hip-hop and electronica. They even offer music releases from local bands and live gigs— so visit for the overall eclectic experience. If you’re a vinyl fanatic already, the Analog Vault organises an annual event called the Analog Assembly. Here, enthusiasts can meet and swap records from their personal vinyl collections.
Enjoy walking the bylanes and meeting your musical heroes. The journey only begins here.
